Recently, a new generation of Capoeiristas sought to combine Capoeira Regional and Capoeira Angola to develop a new style. This new style embraced the innovations of the legendary Mestre Bimba, without losing sight of the guiding principles and values embedded in the history and philosophy of the art. Standing at the forefront of this contemporary movement is Abada Capoeira. The philosophy of the Abada Capoeira is found at the junction between Mestre Bimba’s Capoeira Regional style and the lessons of Mestre Pastinha of Capoeira Angola. It is through this combination that the evolution of Capoeira lies, and where its future is discovered hidden in its past.

Abada Capoeira is a non-profit group whose main objective is to promote Capoeira and Brazilian culture, and to use it as a vehicle for social integration and individual growth. It is part of our philosophy to present our culture to all social groups and classes, and by doing so we hope to keep our roots alive and flourishing.

The philosophy of Abada Capoeira is based on multiple facets, including: the never-ending pursuit of the technical mastery of Capoeira at both the student and teacher levels, the utilization of the art of Capoeira as a valuable pedagogic tool and an artistic and cultural resource, as well as the eventual transformation of student into teacher through the transfer from teacher to student, thus keeping the original value systems and culture of the early Capoeira masters intact.

Philosophy

Abada Capoeira seeks to promote cultural and human values based on respect, socialization and freedom. It hopes to accomplish these goals by spreading the art of Capoeira in and through universities, schools, clubs, associations and diverse community organizations. It also hopes to emphasize the lessons inherent in its Brazilian cultural and historic roots, and by doing so promote social integration between people of different backgrounds and classes. By keeping its social goals at the forefront, Abada Capoeira also seeks to instill good character, dignity and strong personal values in its students.

We at Abada Capoeira understand that Capoeira is both an ancestral and forward-thinking art form. It is the living expression and embodiment of a people that fought for liberty and freedom. Consequently, we believe it should be practiced with reverence, as it deserves the same respect and attention it was given by its originators. However, we also realize that Capoeira must not cease to evolve. And preserve the values involved, our work points towards the future, embracing change and advancement, seeking to give Capoeira the space and freedom required for it to develop to its full potential. The art of Capoeira, like the chameleon, seeks change as a way to preserve its own essence.

Main points:

    - Maintain respect for ourselves, each other, our ever-evolving Capoeira community, the training space we share, and the art that we practice together.

    - Create a safe space to express ourselves as the unique individuals we are.

    - Acknowledge everyone's contribution as valuable. Never underestimate anyone – especially yourself.

    - Be fair, impartial, and true to our word. Don’t cheat ourselves or others. Admit when we are wrong and strive to make it right.

    - Serve as positive role models, both inside the studio while training and outside of the studio as community representatives of Capoeira. Offer help when we can give it and ask for help when we need it. Hold ourselves and each other accountable for our actions.

    - Share experiences – hard and easy, fun and frustrating, painful and pleasurable. Foster a sense of belonging, camaraderie, and wonder. Extend our skills, knowledge, friendship and time. Act for the betterment of the whole.

    - Seek to understand and honor the rich traditions of Capoeira. Choose to expand our knowledge and to take advantage of opportunities presented to us.

    - Commit to challenges. Push physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual limitations, building stronger bodies, minds, and souls. Approach fear and challenges as opportunities for growth, remembering that failure is a benchmark for future success, and achieved goals are marks of success to celebrate and benchmarks to exceed.
